UK coronavirus death toll rises by 65 with almost 13,000 new cases reported

The number of new coronavirus cases in the UK has risen by 12,872 in 24 hours.

Today, England reported 10,383 new cases, Scotland 956, Wales 467 and Northern Ireland 1,066, taking the total number of infections since the pandemic began to 603,716.

The death toll also rose by 65, taking the tragic total to 42,825.

On previous Sundays the death toll rose by 33 last week, 17 on September 27, on September 20 and five on September 13.

The deaths are slightly down from yesterday's 81. The highest increase on a Sunday was 710 on April 12, when Britain was in the deadliest days of its outbreak.

Death tolls announced on Sundays tend to be lower than midweek due to a lag in reporting weekend fatalities.

Earlier today, another 35 hospital deaths were reported in Britain. Of those, 32, were in England, two in Wales and one in Northern Ireland.

Scotland has recorded 956 new cases of coronavirus in the past 24 hours but no deaths have been registered, according to the latest Covid-19 statistics.

The number of new, confirmed infections is down from the 1,009 cases on Saturday and from Friday's record high of 1,246 positive test results.

This represents 14.9% of newly-tested individuals, up from 14.1% on Saturday.

Asked on Sky News whether Scotland had allowed the virus to run out of control, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said: "No, absolutely not and we're working hard to make sure that doesn't happen.

"The R number, the latest figures today suggest that it is spreading a bit faster but the number of cases per 100,000 of the population are actually at the lowest level of all the UK nations.

"That is partly because over the summer we suppressed the virus to very low levels so the rate of spread we are seeing now is from a much, much lower base."

Another 1,066 individuals have tested positive for Covid-19 in the past 24 hours in Northern Ireland, the Department of Health said.

One death has been reported.

Wales reported 467 new coronavirus cases on Sunday, taking the total number of infections to 30,121.

Another two fatalities were also recorded, with 1,669 people now confirmed to have died from the disease in Wales.

The figures come as the Deputy Chief Medical Officer warned the UK has reached a tipping point in the fight against  coronavirus  - similar to the stage we were at in March,

Professor Jonathan Van-Tam pleaded to the public that we must act now to prevent history repeating itself.

ONS data shows an estimated 224,000 people have the virus – up from 116,000 last week, hospital admissions for Covid-19 are rising again, as are intensive care admissions.

Sadly, Professor Van-Tam says, this will be followed by an increase in deaths in the next few weeks.

He said the R for the UK is between 1.2 – 1.5, roughly meaning that every one case generates more than one new case through onward transmission.

Boris Johnson  is poised to make an announcement tomorrow.

He is expected to announce a three-tier lockdown system with the worst-affected areas classed as Tier 3 and facing the harshest restrictions.
