A further 43 people have died in the UK after contracting coronavirus, according to the latest figures released by the Government.

The number of people who have died after testing positive for Covid-19 in hospitals, care homes and the wider community was 42,632 as of 5pm on Saturday, the Department of Health (DoH) announced on Sunday.

The DoH also said in the 24-hour period up to 9am on Sunday, a further 1,221 people had tested positive for coronavirus.

Overall, a total of 7,890,145 tests have been carried out and 304,331 cases have been confirmed positive.

The latest figures came amid reports the Government is readying to next week announce a further easing of Covid-19 lockdown measures in England from July 4 onwards.

Meanwhile, in Scotland, no deaths of patients who have tested positive for coronavirus were registered in the past 24 hours, the regional Government's latest figures showed.

A total of 2,472 patients north of the border have now died after testing positive for Covid-19, no change on Saturday’s figure.

The figure marks the fifth day in June when Scotland's death total has not changed.

The Scottish Government’s daily statistical update also indicated that 18,156 people have now tested positive for the virus in Scotland, up by 26 from 18,130 the previous day.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has regularly sounded a note of caution on the figures of deaths registered at the weekend, however, saying they tend to be artificially low.

There were also no new coronavirus-linked deaths announced in Northern Ireland on Sunday, with the death toll recorded by the Department of Health remaining at 545.

There were four new cases confirmed through tests conducted in health trust labs in the region, taking the caseload recorded by the facilities since the outbreak began to 4,870.
