UK coronavirus death toll rises by 21 in 24 hours

A further 21 deaths involving coronavirus have been recorded by the Department of Health in the last 24 hours.

The new data from the Department of Health and Social Care takes into account fatalities in hospitals, care homes and the wider community.

The death toll now stands at 44,819 - up from 44,798 the previous day.

Today's figures are around the same as last Sunday's daily deaths increase which was 22 and are lower than that of June 28 which saw a rise of 36.

A further 650 people have tested positive for the virus, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 289,603.

The number of cases is slightly up compared to last Sunday's 516.

More than 11.9m tests have now been carried out in the UK with 207,387 tests made available yesterday.

NHS England reported that a further 15 people who tested positive for coronavirus have died in hospital in England, bringing the total number of confirmed reported deaths in hospitals in England to 29,066.

Patients were aged between 72 and 96 years old. One patient, aged 96, had no known underlying health conditions.

No new coronavirus deaths have been reported in Scotland in the last 24 hours, according to the Scottish Government.

A total of 2,490 patients have died in Scotland after testing positive for coronavirus, no change on Saturday’s figure.

It is the fourth day in a row without any fatalities.

There were also no new deaths of people who tested positive for coronavirus in Wales, with the number remaining at 1,541, Public Health Wales said.

The total number of cases in Wales increased by 16 to 15,962.

The government figures do not include all deaths involving Covid-19 across the UK, which are thought to have passed 55,000.
