UK coronavirus death toll rises by 15

There were 15 coronavirus deaths recorded in the UK in the past 24 hours.

The death toll now stands at 42,647 across the country, according to figures released today.

NHS England said that four people had died in the North West while just one patient died in London.

Those who died in English hospitals were aged between 55 and 98 years old.

Scotland has recorded zero new deaths for the sixth time this month, Nicola Sturgeon said earlier today.

Public Health Wales revealed one further person's death with Covid-19, taking the total number of deaths to 1,478, while the total number of cases there increased by 71 to 15,197.

Northern Ireland's Department of Health said deaths remained at 545 and there was just one new case recorded.

Overall the update is the lowest in months.

Yesterday it was confirmed that 43 people had died in all settings, a slight increase on the week before.

The totals on Sundays and Mondays tend to be lower due to delays in reporting during the weekends.

The different and sometimes confusingly different ways deaths are reported was exemplified when NHS England data said 21 hospital deaths had been recorded.

This is because some deaths previously recorded as being in other settings had been reclassified as hospital deaths, but have already been included in overall totals.

Data from the Office for National Statistics suggests the real figure is over 50,000.
