UK coronavirus death toll rises by 12 with more than 1,000 new cases

The UK's total coronavirus death toll has risen by 12 in the last 24 hours in the lowest Tuesday rise since lockdown began.

More than 1,000 new cases were recorded in the last 24 hours, as a total 41,381 people have now tragically died of Covid-19 in all settings, including hospitals, care homes and the community.

Eleven people died in England, one in Northern Ireland, and there were no new deaths in Wales or Scotland in the past 24 hours.

The number of new positive Covid-19 tests also rose on Tuesday, by 1,089 following 169,276 tests. New cases had increased by 713 on Monday.

Previous Tuesday death tolls had always reached close to 100 since the grim count began in March.

Last Tuesday August 11, 102 people died. On August 4, 89 died. On July 28, 119 lost their lives, and on July 21, the toll rose by 110.

The overall death toll has been officially reduced after a recent review took off more than 5,000 from the figure.

Earlier today the UK's hospital death toll had increased by six - the lowest increase on a Tuesday for five months. - taking the country's total to 34,104.

However new official figures earlier this week showed the UK's true toll is now more than 57,000.

The figures compiled by the Office for National Statistics recorded a total almost 16,000 higher than the Government's calculation - based on death certificates mentioning Covid-19, including suspected cases.

Today's figures show 896 coronavirus patients remain in hospital, with 73 on ventilators.

New cases were over 1,000 for the sixth day running on Sunday, then dropped slightly on Monday, before lifting again today.

The majority of the new infections were reported in England, with 634 new cases.

Northern Ireland recorded 39 new virus cases on Tuesday, Scotland had 26 and Wales reported 14.

Yorkshire and the Humber retained retained the highest rate of coronavirus cases in England, according to the official figures, with 623.6 per 10,000 population since the beginning of the pandemic, followed by the north east of England, with 588.7.
