UK coronavirus death toll rises by 119 as total lives lost nears 46,000

The number of people to die from coronavirus has risen by 119, bringing the overall official death toll to 45,878.

The latest figure, announced by the Department of Health and Social Care, includes those who died in all settings, such as care homes.

Yesterday seven deaths were reported, and today's daily increase is a slight increase from 115 last Tuesday.

A further 581 cases were confirmed in labs, bringing the overall number of people to test positive for the virus since the start of the pandemic to 300,692.

Earlier today health authorities announced that 12 patients had died in UK hospitals, with all the fatalities reported in England.

A week ago 115 people died in all settings across the UK, and two weeks ago the daily increase was 138.

Fourteen weeks ago, on April 21, the daily death toll was 823, the highest reported rise on a Tuesday since the start of the pandemic.

It comes as official data show the number of Covid-19 fatalities has slowed dramatically.

Latest figures released by the Office for National Statistics today show the lowest number of weekly deaths mentioning coronavirus in over four months has been recorded.

Of the deaths registered in week 29 of the year, 295 mentioned "novel coronavirus" - the lowest for 17 weeks.

The number had fallen from 366 the previous week and is the lowest since the week ending on March 20, three days before the start of the lockdown.

Figures also revealed the overall number of coronavirus  deaths in England and Wales was steady or falling in all parts - apart from in the South East and South West of England.

The UK's officially recorded coronavirus death toll in all settings increased by seven yesterday, the lowest rise since lockdown began.

Scotland has recorded no coronavirus deaths for a 12th successive day - and confirmed cases are up by just four.

Latest figures from the Scottish Government show the country's death toll remains at 2,491 although 4,193 deaths had been registered up to Sunday, July 19 where the disease was mentioned on the death certificate.

In NHS Ayrshire and Arran no new confirmed cases have been reported in the last 24 hours - with the total since the pandemic started sitting at 1,275.

There are fewer than five patients, within the health board's region, in intensive care with confirmed Covid-19.

The number of people in hospital with confirmed coronavirus at midnight also stands at fewer than five.

Since the start of the outbreak a total of 349,223 people in Scotland have been tested with 18,558 returning a positive result.

The update comes ahead of a final decision on schools going back to full-time education being made tomorrow and announced by First Minister Nicola Sturgeon in parliament on Thursday.
