UK coronavirus death toll rises by 100 in lowest Saturday increase in lockdown

The number of UK deaths from coronavirus has risen by 100 - the lowest Saturday increase in lockdown.

It brought the total number of UK deaths by Covid-19 reported by the Department of Health and Social Care to 43, 514.

The number of deaths from coronavirus in UK hospitals has today increased by 84 - taking the total to a tragic 33,170.

England recorded a further 78 hospital deaths, Wales five and Northern Ireland had one new death - while there were no recorded hospital deaths in Scotland.

NHS England confirmed the total number of confirmed reported deaths in hospitals is now 28,635.

Patients were aged between 56 and 97 years old. Two patients, aged 73 and 96, had no known underlying health conditions.

Their families have been informed.

Yesterday the UK coronavirus death toll in all settings rose by 186 to 43,414 fatalities - the highest daily increase in 10 days.

This included deaths in care homes and in the community.

Last Saturday, June 20, saw the UK's coronavirus  death toll increase by 128 - at the time the lowest rise on a Saturday during the lockdown.

It was the lowest rise on a Saturday since 56 deaths were announced on March 21, three days before the UK went into lockdown.

The Saturday before, June 13, there were 181 more fatalities were reported in 24 hours.

And on the first Saturday in June, the 6th, another 204 deaths were recorded in the UK.

Including deaths from suspected cases of the disease, Britain's toll is over 54,000.

Today's figures come amid reports Brits are set to be allowed to go on holiday across all of Europe under the government’s new travel traffic light system.

The new system will decide which nations are safe to travel to, with those classed as green or amber available to holidaymakers.

Austria, Barbados, Croatia, Germany, New Zealand, Thailand and Greece are some of the countries that have been given the ‘green’ light, according to the Sun.

Greek tourism minister Haris Theoharis also indicated it could be up to three weeks before his country is happy to open up an air bridge to the UK.

He told BBC Breakfast: “We’re currently consulting with our health experts, but I think given the fact that the UK is in the right direction, it’s a matter of a few days or a few weeks to ensure that all restrictions are lifted.

“So I feel the way things are now - and we always have to put this asterisk that the health situation has to continue to be on the same track as it is now - that we can certainly lift the restrictions in the next few days or, you know, two to three weeks.”

This week Brits packed onto beaches in their thousands as the country enjoyed a heatwave - with many failing to stay two metres apart.

It prompted authorities to declare a major incident on Thursday amid fears it could lead to a spike in new infections.
