UK coronavirus death toll rises above 42,000 with further 184 deaths announced

The number of people who have died after testing positive for coronavirus in the UK has risen by a further 184.

The Department of Health has just published its latest figures, which show that the government's working total for deaths from the virus now stands at 42,153.

This includes a further 184 deaths reported today - although these deaths did not all occur in the past 24 hours.

The Department of Health total brings together deaths reported by NHS hospitals as well as care home deaths and people who have died at home for an overall UK figure.

While the government's total has now risen above 42,000 - the Office for National Statistics suggests the real toll is more than 50,000.

The number of deaths does continue to decrease, but the government would hope that the number would be coming down more quickly - especially with more lockdown restrictions being lifted.

A further 77 of the new deaths recorded were in NHS England hospitals.

An NHS England spokesman said: "A further 77 people, who tested positive for the Coronavirus (Covid-19) have died, bringing the total number of confirmed reported deaths in hospitals in England to 28,138.

"Patients were aged between 29 and 98 years old. Two patients, aged 62 and 98, had no known underlying health conditions.

"Their families have been informed."

The North West, which has often been the worst affected in these updates, today reported 16 deaths, lower than the South East (22), and the Midlands (19) - but a higher than all other regions in England.
