UK Coronavirus death toll passes 16,000 as 596 more deaths confirmed

The number of people in the UK dying with coronavirus continues to soar - with more than 16,000 deaths now recorded.

A further 596 deaths have been registered as of Saturday at 5pm, with data collected in from across the UK.

This brings the UK total number of recorded deaths to a harrowing 16,060, according to the Department of Health's latest update.

The Department of Health said: "As of 9am on 19 April, 482,063 tests have concluded, with 21,626 tests on 18 April.

"372,967 people have been tested of which 120,067 tested positive.

"As of 5pm on 18 April, of those hospitalised in the UK who tested positive for coronavirus, 16,060 have sadly died."

This number is tragically up by 596 from from 15,464 the day before.

The Department of Health said, as of 9am on Sunday, 372,967 people have been tested of which 120,067 tested positive.

Overall, 482,063 tests have concluded, with 21,626 tests on Saturday, excluding data from Northern Ireland.

In England, the number of deaths sadly rose by 482.

NHS England said patients were aged between 20 and over 80 years old, based on deaths by age category.

Figures from Public Health England are updated at 2pm each day and include confirmed cases reported at 5pm the previous day.

People tragically included in each day's figures have not all died in the last 24 hours , it is the number of deaths officially registered and can actually span back over a few days.

These figures do not include deaths outside hospital, such as those in care homes.

The figures for hospital trusts across Merseyside and the wider region were also included in the daily briefing.
