UK Coronavirus death toll passes 15,000 as 888 more deaths confirmed

The number of people in the UK dying with coronavirus continues to soar - with more than 15,464 deaths now recorded.

A further 888 deaths have been registered as of Friday at 5pm, with data collected in England, Scotland and Northern ireland.

It takes the UK's overall figure to a harrowing 15,564.

The Department of Health said on Saturday at 2pm: "A total of 15,464 patients have died in hospital after testing positive for coronavirus in the UK as of 5pm."

This number is tragically 888 from 14, 576 the day before.

The Department of Health said, as of 9am on Saturday, 357,023 people have been tested of which 114,217 tested positive.

Overall, 460,437 tests have concluded, with 21,389 tests on Friday, excluding data from Northern Ireland.

In England, the number of deaths sadly rose by 784.

NHS England said patients were aged between 26 and 100 years old and 38 of these patients, aged between 44 and 96, had no known underlying health condition.

A total of 893 people who tested positive for coronavirus in Scotland have died, a rise of 56 on Friday's figure, according to the Scottish Government.

Across the country, 38,233 people have now been tested for Covid-19, with 7,820 testing positive.

As of Friday night, 1,793 patients were in hospital with either confirmed or suspected coronavirus, a decrease of six.

Of those, 182 were being treated in intensive care units, down seven from the previous night.

Public Health Wales has announced 28 new deaths of people who tested positive for Covid-19, bringing the total number of confirmed fatalities in Wales to 534.

The new deaths, by health board area, are: five in Aneurin Bevan, one in Cardiff and Vale, 19 in Cwm Taf Morgannwg and two in Swansea Bay, with one death elsewhere in Wales.

There have been a total of 6,936 confirmed cases in Wales, a rise of 292, while 24,114 tests have been carried out on 20,766 individuals.

A further 17 people in Northern Ireland have died in hospital settings with coronavirus in the past day, the Public Health Agency said. This brings the total number of confirmed deaths in hospital settings in the region to 193.

The news comes as a leading health expert has predicted the UK's death total could reach a terrifying 40,000 - and predicted there could be further waves of the virus in the country.

Professor Anthony Costello, of University College London’s Institute for Global Health said: "If we’re going to suppress the chain of transmission of this virus in the next stage we all hope that the national lockdown and social distancing will bring about a large suppression of the epidemic so far – but we’re going to face further waves."
