UK coronavirus death toll nears 45,000 after 138 more die

A further 138 people's deaths from Covid-19 have been recorded in the UK, bringing the death toll to 44,968.

England endured the bulk of the newly recorded deaths, with 134 people dying of Covid-19 in the country.

The deaths of two people from both Northern Ireland and Wales were recorded.

There were no new deaths in Scotland.

The figures, which are released by the Department of Health, show a slight decline compared to last Tuesday.

A week ago 155 people deaths were recorded - 21 less than today.

There were also 581 newly confirmed cases last week, compared to 398 today.

The figures released today are significantly higher than Sunday and Monday, when 21 and 11 new deaths were recorded respectively.

While the latter number is the lowest in the UK in four months, the difference between yesterday and today's total can largely be explained by a lag in reporting over the weekends.

The number of new deaths today recorded across all settings - including hospitals and in the community - is comparable to those recorded on weekdays over the past month.

The increase in deaths comes in a week when the Government announced that face coverings would become mandatory in shops.

A report recently published by the Royal Society suggests that this could help to lower the coronavirus infection rate significantly.

Even basic homemade face coverings can reduce transmission if enough people wear them when in public, the research found.

The study, based on mathematical modelling, showed that if an entire population wore face coverings that were only 75% effective, it would bring the R value, which is the number of people an infected individual passes the virus on to, from 4.0 to under 1.0, without the need for lockdowns.

Meanwhile, another study which looked at coronavirus deaths across 198 countries found that nations which had policies favouring mask-wearing had lower death rates.

In another piece of scientific research, published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences last month, scientists calculated that wearing face coverings prevented more than 78,000 infections in Italy between April 6 and May 9, and more than 66,000 infections in New York City between April 17 and May 9.
