A total of 31,241 people have now died in the UK after testing positive for coronavirus.

The death toll is up by 626 from 30,615 at the same point on Thursday.

The total number of confirmed cases is now up to 211,364 - a rise of  4,649 from 206,715 at the same point yesterday.

More than 1.6m tests for the virus have now been carried out in the UK and a total of 97,029 tests were carried out yesterday, the latest figures reveal.

There are currently 11,788 people in UK hospitals with coronavirus - down from 12,688 yesterday.

NHS England announced 332 new deaths of people who tested positive for Covid-19, bringing the total number of confirmed reported deaths in hospitals in England to 22,765.

The latest figures include a six-week-old baby.

Public Health Wales said a total of 1,090 people have died after testing positive for coronavirus, an increase of 28 on Thursday’s figures.

In Scotland, a total of 1,811 patients have died after testing positive for coronavirus, up by 49 from 1,762 on Thursday, Nicola Sturgeon said.

In Northern Ireland, an additional 1,202 people were tested resulting in 38 new confirmed cases of coronavirus, which brings the total number of cases in the region to 4,022.

The Department of Health releases a daily death toll which includes deaths in the community as well as those in hospital.

However it is lower than the weekly death toll announced by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) as it does not include suspected cases - only cases where people have died after testing positive.

The latest figures from ONS show that there were 29,648 deaths in England and Wales as of April 24, compared to 22,173 deaths for the same period recorded by the Department of Health.

The criteria for people eligible for testing has been expanded to include all staff and residents at care homes, anyone over the age of 65 with symptoms and anyone who has to leave home for work with symptoms.
