UK coronavirus death toll increases by 173 in latest update

A further 173 people were recorded as having died with coronavirus in the UK in the latest update from the government.

The latest increase takes the total number of deaths in all settings to 42,461.

As of 5pm on June 18, of those who tested positive for coronavirus across all settings, 42,461 have sadly died.

Today's increase marks more deaths recorded since yesterday but is a decrease on the 202 recorded last Friday.

As of 9am on June 19, there have been 7,433,114 tests carried out for the virus as part of the government's national testing strategy.

The Department of Health and Social Care, who release the figures, said there were 169,600 tests issued on June 18.

301,815 people have tested positive for the deadly virus and 42,461 have died but official numbers from the Office for National Statistics suggest the real total is over 50,000.
