UK coronavirus death toll increases by 135 as average daily deaths drop slightly

A further 135 people were recorded as having died with coronavirus in the UK in the latest update from the government.

The increase takes the total number of deaths in all settings to 42,288.

Today's increase was down 16 on last Thursday, and means the rolling seven-day average for deaths in all settings is now 144.4, a slight drop.

The number of cases increased by 1,218 from 136,516 tests - though once again the Department of Health and Social Care, who release the figures, did not say how many people were actually tested over the last 24 hours.

62 of the deaths were recorded in NHS England hospitals, with the average numbers for hospital deaths also steadily declining, although not dramatically.

In Merseyside, seven more deaths were recorded in hospitals, including in Liverpool and Wirral, which had seen a number of days without any deaths recorded recently.

The figures come in the week shops were allowed to begin reopening in England, but hopes hospitality could be up and running again soon were dealt a blow - at least in Scotland.

First Minister Ms Sturgeon highlighted "very strong emerging evidence" that pubs and restaurants could be sites of coronavirus "super spreading", and said no date would yet be set for them to reopen north of the Border.

She said she has asked her scientific advisory group to carry out more research about how and when they can be safely reopened.

"When there are these risks, it would be reckless and irresponsible of me not to understand them better before taking decisions to reopen pubs," she said.
