UK coronavirus death toll in huge jump as another 627 die bringing total to 32,692

A further 627 people have died of Covid-19 in the UK.

The latest figures from the Department of Health show that as of 9am on May 12, there have been 2,007,146 tests, with 85,293 on May 11 alone.

A total 1,460,517 people have been tested of which 226,463 tested positive.

As of 5pm on May 11, of those tested positive for coronavirus across all settings, 32,692 have sadly died.

The numbers are a significant increase from yesterday's rise.

From Sunday to Monday a further 210 people lost their lives because of Covid-19, the Department of Health announced.

Typically the death tolls are lower on Sunday and Monday due to a lag in reporting over the weekend.

Today's total is now much lower than they were on Tuesday last week, when 693 more people were added to the overall death toll.

The sharp rise comes on the same day that heartbreaking figures earlier revealed more than 8,300 people had died in English and Welsh care homes by the end of last month after contracting Covid-19.

People are advised to wear masks in enclosed public spaces (PA)

And new figures released by the Office for National Statistics suggest the UK's true death toll is more than 40,000.

In a bid to slow the rate of infection the Government has advised that people wear face coverings when in public.

All those but babies and toddlers under the age of two should wear the face protection in enclosed public spaces where you may be more likely to come into contact with people you do not normally meet, such as in shops.

The public is also being strongly urged not to purchase surgical masks or respirators, which are prioritised for healthcare workers.

Instead you should use scarves or have a go at making your own at home.
