The death toll from coronavirus in the UK has hit 71.

The NHS said 67 people in England have now died from the virus after 14 more secumbed to the virus as of Tuesday.

Seven of the deaths were in London, which has emerged as the epicentre of the country's outbreak.

A statement from NHS England said: “A further 14 people, who tested positive for the Coronavirus (Covid-19) have died, bringing the total number of confirmed reported deaths in England to 67.

“Patients were aged between 93 and 45 years old and had underlying health conditions. Their families have been informed.”

It comes as the number of people in the UK who have tested positive in Britain hit 1,950.

As of 9am, 407 more people were confirmed to have Covid-19, the biggest daily increase in cases recorded to date.

Some 50,442 coronavirus tests have now been carried out in the UK, 48,492 of which came back negative.

But as many as 55,000 people in the UK could have the coronavirus, the government's chief scientific adviser Sir Patrick Vallance told MPs.

And Sir Patrick told the House of Commons Health Committee that keeping the death toll from the outbreak below 20,000 would represent a "good outcome".

Half of the latest UK death toll figures were in the capital on Tuesday, it was revealed, with seven of the 14 victims dying in London hospitals.

It follows Boris Johnson saying on Monday that London appears to be "a few weeks ahead" of other parts of the UK in terms of the Covid-19 spread.

At the Prime Minister asked people in the capital to particularly stick to the ramped up measures suggested - including avoiding pubs, clubs and theatres.

Meanwhile, Wales also reported its second death from coronavirus on Tuesday.

On Monday, the death toll hit 55 and number of cases soared to 1,543 as Boris Johnson set out the need for "drastic action" to tackle the UK's "fast growth" of coronavirus in the UK.

The Prime Minister said that according to the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage) “it looks as though we are now approaching the fast growth part of the upward curve” in the number of cases.
