UK coronavirus daily deaths up by 1,322 in significant drop on last Wednesday

A further 1,322 coronavirus deaths have been recorded in the UK and 19,202 more infections with numbers down on last week.

It is the lowest Wednesday daily death rise since January 6.

It's a drop on last Wednesday when 1,725 fatalities and 25,308 new cases were announced.

Today's cases were down by 6,106 on last Wednesday and the lowest Wednesday case count since December 9.

Yesterday coronavirus claimed the lives of 1,449 more patients in the UK, with 406 dying the day before that.

Daily death tolls have tended to be higher on Tuesdays due to a build up following weekends which aren't processed in time for Mondays.

The record daily increase for UK deaths, meanwhile, is 1,820, which was set on January 20.

Figures from January 28 show 29,604 Covid patients had been admitted to hospital in the previous seven days, with an average of 2,981 per day.

Meanwhile, over nine million people had been vaccinated in the UK on Monday.

Figures for February 1 show 9,646,715 people had been given their first jab and 496,796 their second.

While the R rate remains between 0.7 to 1.1, with a daily infection growth rate range of -5 per cent to 0 per cent as of January 29.

The figures come after a top scientist has said that the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine could prove to be the "holy grail" the world needs - after data showed it appears to cut transmission rates by two thirds.

This could lead to lockdown measures being lifted sooner than many dared to hope, according to Dr Gillies O'Bryan-Tear, former chair at the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Medicine.

While hundreds of coronavirus vaccines were binned after a storage fridge was accidentally turned off in a vaccination centre.

Around 450 doses of the Pfizer jab were binned following a “power-related issue” with a fridge at Montgomery Hall in Wath-upon-Dearne, Rotherham, last month.
