UK coronavirus daily deaths rise by 19 as country hits 30 million first jab doses

The UK's coronavirus death toll has increased by 19 as the vaccine roll out hit 30 million people.

It is the lowest Sunday daily death toll since September 20 when there were 18 fatalities.

By comparison, the daily tolls announced on recent Sundays were 33 on March 21, 52 on March 14, 82 on March 7, 144 on February 28, and 215 on February 21.

The UK also recorded a further 3,862 cases in the latest 24 hour period, up from a total of 5,312 a week ago.

Figures on Sundays and Mondays tend to be lower than the rest of the week due to a weekend lag in reporting.

Yesterday saw a rise of 33 fatalities which took the UK's overall tally of people to have died after contracting Covid-19 to 150,000.

More than 30 million people in the UK have received a first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine as the NHS prepares to administer millions of second doses in the coming weeks.

The UK health services vaccinated a total of 30,151,287 people between 8 December and 27 March with first doses - that's around 57 percent of all UK adults.

In addition, 3,527,481 people have had their second doses, totalling 33,678,768 jabs administered overall.

Around 6 percent of the adult population have had their second doses so far.

The rollout is continuing at pace and the government is adamant the UK is on track to achieve the Prime Minister’s target of offering all over-50s and the clinically vulnerable their first vaccine by April 15, as well as all adults by the end of July.

It comes as the UK's coronavirus R rate continues to slowly rise, with the latest figures on Friday showing it is currently between 0.7 and 0.9.

This compares to it being between 0.6 and 0.9 a day the week before, amid fears a third wave of the virus could hit the UK in the summer as restrictions continue to be lifted.

People in England will be able to meet outdoors either in groups of six or as two households from for the first time in months from Monday thanks in part to the success of the rollout.

A record-breaking week for vaccinations has seen 844,285 doses administered in just one day.

But a supply shortage could slow things down in the coming weeks, with under 50s told to expect delays in getting their first jabs.

However, at the same time, the UK reportedly plans to offer the Republic 3.7million spare Covid vaccines as early as Easter in part to help lift lockdown in Northern Ireland.

It would become the first time Britain has exported jabs to the EU amid a brewing trade dispute over supplies which saw Brussels threatening to block doses shipping to the UK.
