UK coronavirus daily death toll nearly doubles as total reaches 45,233

The UK's official coronavirus death toll has increased by 114 in the last 24 hours.

Today's figure is almost double the 66 deaths reported yesterday by the Department of Health and Social Care.

The total recorded deaths across all settings now stands at 45,233, according to the latest figures released today.

This total includes deaths in hospitals, care homes and in the community, and reflect when deaths were recorded rather than when they actually happened.

There were also a further 687 new cases of coronavirus according to lab confirmed test results - 45 more than yesterday's figure of 642 new cases.

As of 4:02pm on Friday 17 July, the total number of lab confirmed UK cases of coronavirus was 293,239.

The number of deaths across all settings had been in decline in recent days with numerous totals below three figures. However, today's total is a reverse of that trend.

Earlier today NHS England announced that 16 further coronavirus deaths had occurred in hospitals in England bringing the total figure of hospital deaths to 29,160.

Hospital trusts in the North West accounted for three of the 16 total deaths, while there were five deaths in the Midlands, four in the South East and two in the East of England and Yorkshire and the North East respectively.

There have been zero further coronavirus deaths at the hospitals in our region, according to the latest figures released today.
