UK coronavirus cases rocket to 456 after biggest daily increase

The number of confirmed cases of coronavirus in the UK has risen to 456 - its biggest daily increase so far.

A total of 456 people have tested positive for coronavirus in the UK as of 9am on Wednesday, up from 373 at the same point on Tuesday, the Department of Health said.

The rise in confirmed cases in the UK from 373 to 456 is the largest day-on-day increase since the outbreak began.

It is a jump of 83, which is 22% up on the equivalent figure for Tuesday.

The Chancellor has promised the NHS "whatever it needs" in terms of funding to tackle the spread of coronavirus, as the number of UK cases more than doubled in just four days.

Rishi Sunak set out plans for the health service in his Budget and pledged security and support for those who are sick and unable to work due to the spread of Covid-19.

The number of cases of coronavirus in Scotland has risen by a third to 36.

The Scottish Government confirmed that was the latest total of people diagnosed with Covid-19, up from 27 on Tuesday.

The latest daily figures showed that of the 2,316 tests carried out in Scotland a total of 2,280 tests were negative for the disease.

NHS Lothian area has the highest number of cases, with eight confirmed, while there are six in NHS Grampian and five in the Greater Glasgow and Clyde NHS board area.

A further four cases have been detected in the Lanarkshire area, as well as three in Ayrshire and Arran, and two each in NHS Borders, NHS Fife, NHS Forth Valley, NHS Shetland and NHS Tayside.
