UK coronavirus cases rise by more than 23,000 in one day with 162 further deaths

The number of UK coronavirus cases has risen by 23,254 as the death toll increases by 162.

Today's death toll was around half of yesterday's, but the number of new cases was more than Saturday's count.

Yesterday the total number of confirmed coronavirus infections in the UK passed one million, with a further 326 deaths reported.

There were 21,915 infections confirmed in 24 hours, the Department of Health confirmed, bringing the total since the start of the pandemic to 1,011,660.

On Sunday the total number of deaths in the UK has hit 1,034,914, Government data shows.

The data looks at the number of deaths of people who had had a positive test result for Covid-19 and died within 28 days of the first positive test.

Wales reported 16 new fatalities, taking the total number of deaths there to 1,888.

And Northern Ireland today reported a further eight deaths from coronavirus, which took the overall figure to 716.

Today's figures come a day after Boris Johnson announced England would be plunged into a second lockdown for a month.

People will be ordered to stay at home while pubs, restaurants, hairdressers, gyms and non-essential shops must shut.

The Prime Minister made a Saturday night statement to the nation more than a month after his scientific experts called for a time-limited shutdown.

The lockdown will begin at 12.01am on Thursday 5 November, subject to Parliamentary approval.

It will end on Wednesday 2 December, when the government seek to ease the new restrictions on a local and regional basis, according to the latest data and trends at the time.

The lockdown will be subject to a debate and a vote in the House of Commons which is likely on Wednesday.

The introduction of national restrictions marks a dramatic shift in Government policy, as the Prime Minister has until now resisted pressure to reintroduce nationwide restrictions.
