UK coronavirus cases rise above 17,000 in 24 hours as another 77 deaths are recorded

Another 17,000 lab-confirmed cases of coronavirus have been recorded in the UK in the last 24 hours.

The number of deaths has also increased by 77 - up by seven on Wednesday but significantly higher than Monday's figure of 19.

The government said that, as of 9am on Thursday, there had been a further 17,540 lab-confirmed cases of coronavirus in the UK - up by 3,378 on Wednesday.

This takes the overall number of cases confirmed to 561,815.

A further 77 people have died within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19 as of Wednesday.

This brings the UK total to 42,592.

Separate figures published by the UK's statistics agencies show there have now been 57,600 deaths registered in the UK where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate.

Figures also reveal that there are now 442 376 patients on ventilation - up by 66 - and a total of 3,412 in hospital - an increase of 468 on Wednesday.

All figures are based on Public Health England data published on Thursday.
