UK confirmed coronavirus death toll passes 37,000

The number of people who have died in the UK after contracting coronavirus has passed 37,000, according to the Department of Health.

A total of 37,048 people have died in hospitals, care homes and the wider community after testing positive for the virus in the UK as of 5pm on Monday, the latest figures reveal.

The death toll is up by 134 from 36,914 the day before.

In the 24-hour period up to 9am on Tuesday, 109,979 tests were carried out or dispatched.

An additional 2,004 cases of coronavirus have been confirmed in the last 24 hours.

Overall a total of 3,681,295 tests have been carried out and 265,227 cases have been confirmed positive.

For the first time in two months, Northern Ireland recorded zero new deaths in the last 24 hours.

The overall total according to the department of health in Northern Ireland remains at 514.

Stormont’s health minister Robin Swann welcomed the fact but cautioned that there were “no grounds for complacency”.

“Sadly there will be more lives lost in the days and weeks ahead,” he said.

Meanwhile, NHS England announced 116 new deaths of people who tested positive for Covid-19, bringing the total number of confirmed reported deaths in hospitals in England to 25,866.

Public Health Wales said a further eight people have died after testing positive for coronavirus, taking the total number of deaths in Wales to 1,282.

Another 141 people have tested positive for Covid-19, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the country to 13,556.

In Scotland, a total of 2,291 patients have died after testing positive for coronavirus, up by 18 from 2,273 on Monday, Nicola Sturgeon said.

She said 15,185 people have tested positive for the virus in Scotland, up by 29 from 15,156 the day before.

According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS) the number of deaths involving coronavirus in the UK has passed 47,000.

The number is higher than the Department of Health's total because it includes suspected cases as well as confirmed.

There were 4,210 UK deaths involving Covid-19 registered in the week ending May 15, according to the most recent ONS data.

That is the lowest weekly total since the week ending April 3, when 3,801 Covid-19-related deaths were registered.
