UK citizens living in Europe being banned from driving thanks to Brexit

Thousands of UK citizens living in France have lost their driving licence or face losing it within months because of Brexit.

Around 3,000 people say they are seriously concerned - as the move could mean them losing their livelihoods.

Similar rules are stopping people from driving in Spain and Italy.

Kim Cranstoun, who runs a Facebook group for thousands of Brits living in France, told The Guardian : “I’d say there are 3,000 who are seriously worried – for whom this has really become nightmarish.

“Commuters risk losing their jobs, tradespeople can’t work, elderly people have missed medical appointments. Many British people in France live in quite remote, rural areas, with little or no public transport. Some are thinking of moving back to the UK. It’s quite desperate.”

After Brexit, Brits living in France have been told they have to ditch their UK driving licence and apply for a French one.

But France is now routinely rejecting all applications from UK citizens for a new French licence because there is no agreement in place between France and the UK after Brexit.

Instead of swapping the licence, Brits could take a French driving test - including a theory test in French - at a cost of around £1,800.

UK citizens in Spain have until June 30 to swap their licence.

Those in Italy who did not get a new licence before Brexit have to take an Italian driving test.

Visitors to Europe from the UK - for example holidaymakers - can continue to use their UK licence.
