UK citizens can now travel to Spain without having to quarantine in major rule change

Spain's foreign minister has announced a major update for British holidaymakers.

Brits will be able to holiday in Spain from Sunday - without having to quarantine.

There had been threats of a tit-for-tat quarantine being imposed on British tourists in response to the UK potentially requiring Spanish citizens travelling to the UK to quarantine.

But now, the Spanish government appears to have backed down and is allowing UK citizens to visit.

Those travelling from the UK will need to register to allow the Spanish government to trace them.

British holidaymakers will still need to pass three health checks upon arrival in Spain.

The Spanish government confirmed the new rules, stating if a passenger fails any of the checks, they will need to be seen by a doctor.

Holiday hopefuls will have to provide authorities with details including where they'll be staying for their trip and whether they've previously had coronavirus.

Spain’s Foreign Minister, Arancha Gonzalez said: "We will allow British visitors just like the rest of the EU to come to Spain freely and without the need for quarantine.

"There will be a triple-check for their origin, temperature and we’ll ask everyone to register so we can trace them."

There is currently no news on any changes to quarantine restrictions for those coming back to the UK.

Spain is reliant on tourism, with 2.6million jobs reliant on the sector.

The UK and Spain are still in talks over whether Spanish visitors arriving in the UK will need to quarantine.

Currently, the Foreign Office warns against all non-essential travel.

And upon returning to the UK, most arrivals must isolate for 14 days or face a fine of up to £1,000 if they are caught breaching the measures.
