UK Boxing Day weather: Met Office warning predicts heavy snow is coming

While the dream of a white Christmas may not have come true for many in the UK, some parts of the country could be seeing it made up for on Boxing Day.

While some dustings of snow were seen around the UK on Christmas Day, the Met Office is warning that the heaviest snow is set to fall today instead (December 26).

A yellow weather warning is in place across the morning of Boxing Day, issued by the Met Office, predicting snow across much of northern England and then into southern and central Scotland.

The warning in place over England says: "Snow and strong winds are expected, leading to possible disruption, mainly to travel over higher ground."

The warning also says for people to expect some roads and railways to be affected by snow or ice, leading to longer journey times by car, as well as potentially impacting bus and train services.

It also warns that short term losses of power or other services is possible as wild weather moves in.

The warnings for snow in England and Scotland came into effect just after midnight this morning, and are in place until midday on Boxing Day, presenting the chance of a wintry opening to the day.

The UK-wide five-day forecast calls for snow to mainly be seen on higher ground across the affected regions, with conditions in the south of England remaining milder than those up north.
