UK bank holidays in 2022 and 2023 confirmed - full list of days off

Bank holidays can offer a day off and often result in a long weekend. The widely-anticipated national public holiday dates see most shops and businesses shut, schools close and public transport services reduced.

While you may be due a day off, employers don't have to give workers paid leave on bank holidays. These dates can also affect how and when benefits are paid/.

Most bank holidays are generally around the same time every year, such as Christmas, Easter or New Years. And if the date falls on a weekend, the bank holiday is moved to a weekday instead.

On special occasions, extra bank holidays can be established. This year, there were two extra bank holidays – one for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee in June and another for Her Majesty's state funeral last month.

There could be an extra bank holiday announced for the coronation of King Charles III next year. However, the date of the ceremony and whether it will be a bank holiday has not yet been confirmed.

The only remaining bank holidays in 2022 are Christmas Day and Boxing Day, which will result in a four-day weekend. Boxing Day is on Monday, December 26 and, as Christmas falls on a Sunday this year, the substitute bank holiday will be on Tuesday, December 27.

Looking ahead, there are eight bank holidays to mark in your calendars next year as things stand, reports The Mirror.

Here is a list of all confirmed bank holidays in England and Wales in 2023:

  • Monday, January 2 - New Year's Day (Substitute day as it falls on a Sunday)
  • Friday, April 7 - Good Friday
  • Monday, April 10 - Easter Monday
  • Monday, May 1 - Early May bank holiday
