Plans are on the table for those arriving into the UK from abroad to quarantine in hotels.
The move, reportedly being considered by Downing Street, could also apply to Brits - and they would have to pay for it themselves.
According to the Mirror, ministers are set to discuss the tougher restrictions from tomorrow (Monday).
It has been reported that the quarantine period would last for 10 days and travellers would have to supply proof they are adhering to the rules.
While the move is understood to be backed by the Cabinet for international travellers, there remains some debate over whether the rules should apply to all Brits.
A source told The Sun: “It is likely all arrivals from certain areas would be expected to stay at a hotel.
“It would be too much of a risk to expect they would all self-isolate at home for that period.”
Prime Minister Boris Johnson told a news conference on Friday that the UK may need to implement further measures to protect its borders from new variants of Covid-19.
