UK and Scottish Governments should work closer together on covid, poll finds

A majority of people in a new poll want the Scottish and UK Governments to work closer together on covid -19.

Around two third of individuals in the same snapshot said they are not satisfied with the way the two Governments collaborate on key issues.

Both Governments have worked together to combat coronavirus, but the relationship has also been marked by tension.

Although Nicola Sturgeon’s Ministers welcomed the extension of the furlough policy until next year, they believed it should have been confirmed much earlier.

In comments earlier this year, Prime Minister Boris Johnson also criticised suggestions of people from England having to quarantine if they came to Scotland.

A new poll by Survation, commissioned by the pro-UK Scotland in Union organisation, has revealed dissatisfaction with the way the administrations cooperate with each other.

In relation to covid, 56% of people said they wanted both governments to work more closely together on a joint response to the pandemic in Scotland.

Around one fifth, 19%, said they wanted both governments to “continue working as closely together as they do at the moment” on covid.

Sixteen per cent said they wanted both governments to work “less closely” and 9% said they did not know.

More broadly, 66% said they were “not satisfied” with the way the UK and Scottish governments “work together on the issues that impact on my life”.

SiU chief executive Pamela Nash said: “Co-operation should be at the heart of devolution, not division.

“This poll shows that a majority of people in Scotland are dissatisfied with the way that our two governments work together, and particularly want the administrations to co-operate more amid the ongoing coronavirus emergency.

“Both governments should put their differences aside and take a leaf out of Joe Biden’s book as he promotes the importance of unity and bringing people together.”

A UK Government spokesperson said: “Now is the time for the United Kingdom to be pulling together, to focus on defeating this virus.

“Throughout the pandemic, the UK Government has worked closely with the devolved administrations and local partners.

“Never has it been more important for Scotland to be part of a strong United Kingdom, with the might of the UK Treasury supporting jobs and businesses in Scotland and all parts of the UK.”

A spokesperson for SNP Cabinet Secretary Michael Russell: “This poll is a horrendous gaffe from Scotland in Union, as it shows fully two-thirds of Scots don’t believe the union is working for them.

“And the only lesson that needs to be learned from the US election is that the Tories’ Trump-like bid to deny democracy by trying to ignore election results is doomed to fail.”
