Ugly telephone exchange boxes are being painted in Swansea seaside locations

Dull and drab electrical boxes are getting a colourful enhancement with eye-catching murals which lend themselves to the beauty of Langland .

Fresh Murals Co. is busy painting over 12 of the boxes in the seaside area of Swansea , which depict themes including beach huts, sand and sky, and sea creatures.

Along with Langland, the designs, which are being carried out on behalf of Swansea Council and councillor Will Thomas, are going to be placed at other locations including Caswell Bay and Newton .

Owner of Fresh Murals Co, James Burgess, who carries out the work himself along with Ffion Roberts, said: "It's a beach theme based on beach colours, the sand and sky. It has been very well received and we've had a lot of positive feedback.

"People like to see art, it is enriching and has a cultural aspect. It is better than looking at a dull, grey box.

"It's great to be talking to the community and we're trying to represent what people want to see."

The art company has been behind other similar murals which have been spotted around the city in recent years, including the Dylan Thomas trail, which sees famous characters from the poet and writer's life depicted in the Uplands area.

Images of Don Shepherd and Alan Jones have also been created on murals at St Helen’s rugby and cricket ground on Mumbles Road, alongside an image of the iconic Mumbles train.

Mr Burgess said a meeting had been held with Robert Francis-Davies, Swansea Council cabinet member for investment, regeneration and tourism, where there had been a discussion of the potential for such art to be painted in other suburbs of the city.

"It is down to the different wards," Mr Burgess said.

"I can't see any reason why we can't do other areas of Swansea."
