Ugly mass brawl involving up to 70 people breaks out in town centre at 3am

Police descended on a town centre near Manchester in the early hours following reports of a mass brawl involving dozens of people.

The ugly scenes in the middle of Altrincham, Trafford, were captured on video, with punches thrown but no arrests have been made.

Greater Manchester Police said it was called to reports of a disturbance at 3am on Sunday but the crowds of up to 70 had dispersed by the time officers arrived.

Video shot by a by-stander shows the violent gathering in Peter Street, a small side road between Oxford Road and Ashley Road reports the Manchester Evening News.

Punches can be seen being thrown, as well as grappling and attempts to separate fighters.

One eyewitness told the MEN that the scuffle seemed to involve two groups with the fight centring around two men in particular.

"I looked out and saw a big group of people on Ashley Road," the onlooker said.

"I didn't think anything of it at first, I thought maybe some of the local bars were closing.

"But the group just started getting bigger and bigger.

"That's when I noticed it starting to spew onto Peter Street.

"It did look like two groups, one against another.

"It was two individuals in particular who seemed to be doing a lot of the fighting.

"But what started it or led to it I've no idea.

"I was very shocked to see it really. You do see stuff like that occasionally but not in Altrincham. It's normally quite a relaxed vibe and a good night out."

"I was very surprised to see no police around," he added.

"One of my friends called 999.

"But they were there for around half an hour until they started to disperse."

A GMP spokesman said: "At about 3am today (4 July 2021), officers were called to reports of a large gathering at Peter Street, Altrincham.

"Between 50 and 70 people were reported to be fighting in the street but had dispersed when police arrived.

"Enquiries are ongoing and no arrests have been made."
