Ugly Bread Bakery opens a new cafe and shop in Hockley

"Hockley we have missed you" says a sign on the wall signalling the return of popular cafe and deli Ugly Bread Bakery to the buzzing area.

It has been three months since the business bid farewell to Pelham Street (not strictly Hockley, but not far off) after negotiations with the landlord broke down.

But it's back with a new venue in Carlton Street, opposite Bar Iberico and next door to secret bar Boilermaker, with all the mouth-watering, mammoth sandwiches, pizzas and cakes that customers have come to know and love.

Owner Jade Vendone, who also has a shop in Market Street, echoed the sentiment on the wall.

"I am so happy to be back in Hockley," she said.

"I've missed the atmosphere and the people. It's like a country of its own.

"A lot of people have come in and said 'we're glad you're back.'"

It took three weeks of solid work and 16-hour days to transform the former newsagent's shop, Gill's, into a cafe. There any many familiar touches with some of the fixtures and fittings from the old place, including the books.

The sourdough bread is all made by Jade's father Luciano, who also makes pizza dough for Suede, in Heathcoat Street, where Jade's brother Antonio is a partner.

Fillings for mezzaluna, ciabatta and foccacia - think Italian-style doorstep sandwiches - change daily.

"We make them up randomly," said Jade, whose personal favourite is mozzarella, sundried tomato, pesto and spinach.

Anything with Applewood cheddar or pepperoni always flies out the door.

Teaming up with other local independent businesses - Beeston Brownie, the Pudding Pantry and Familia Express - to sell some of their sweet treats is a win-win situation. It's hard to resist chocolate brownies, raspberry and coconut slices, blackcurrant crumble cake, cannoli and miso magic flapjacks on display at the counter.

The space is more compact - there's no longer a mezzanine floor - but there's virtually as many seats inside at cute turquoise tables for one, two and more, and high stools at a bench.

There's no outdoor seating yet - the application to the council is on Jade's to-do list along with re-establishing a delivery service through Deliveroo.

Carlton Street's hours are 9am to 8pm Tuesday to Friday, Saturday 9am to 6pm, and Sunday 11am to 5pm. The branch in Market Street opens at 11am until late, and is a popular meeting place for community groups, workshops and business networking.
