Ugly block of flats in Neath is razed to the ground

A block of ugly-looking flats in Neath have been knocked down and work has begun on replacing them.

In March, social housing provider Tai Tarian gained approval for the  demolition of the Melyn Close flats  in Melin.

Now, the demolition of the flats has been completed and work on the foundations and draining systems of the replacements has started.

The old flats will be replaced by three new smaller blocks, creating a total of 14 one-bedroom flats and six two-bedroom flats.

The plans also include the provision of car parking and cycle storage with the surrounding area also being landscaped.

Work is currently scheduled to be completed in February, 2020.

The home provider aims to be carbon neutral by 2030 and said the new homes would be environmentally friendly, with high levels of insulation, efficient heating and solar panel sourced energy.

Port Talbot -based contractor, CJ Construction (Wales) Ltd has been appointed to carry out the work, which commenced in April.

This work is one of the latest developments undertaken by Tai Tarian, but other recent projects include 31 new homes at Parc Newydd,  Briton Ferry, as well as developments at Llys, Wern, Caewern, and at Evelyn Terrace in Port Talbot.

Speaking about the new flats, Tai Tarian director of assets, Andrew Carey, said: “Providing high quality homes is important to us as an organisation, not only to alleviate demand locally but to ensure our tenants have homes they can be proud of.

"We are also pleased that CJ Construction was awarded the contract to undertake the work, as we firmly believe in supporting local business and in turn helping to create more jobs. We are currently working with them on our Evelyn Terrace development so we know that they will deliver homes of an exceptionally high quality.”
