UGC norms row leaves Allahabad University campus divided

The Supreme Court has temporarily stayed the UGC’s new equity regulations with the next hearing scheduled for March 19.

The norms had triggered strong reactions across campuses, particularly among sections of the upper castes. To understand this growing unrest and anxiety, we spoke to students at Allahabad University, which saw protests against the proposed guidelines.

Students mobilising under the banner of the ‘savarna samaj’ said they have concerns about how “victimhood” is being defined. But others raised questions about the structure and functioning of the proposed equity committees.
