UGC: Full fee refund for admissions cancelled before October

MUMBAI: Students who cancel this year’s admission before October 31 will be entitled to a full fee refund. The University Grants Commission (UGC), which sent the fee refund directive to all higher educational institutes (HEIs), said the same has been decided in view of “pandemic-related factors.”

Ever since the pandemic derailed the admission cycle and pushed it by a few months, the UGC has been postponing the date for the past two years.

This year, because of the delay caused by the class XII CBSE, results which pushed several entrance tests too, HEIs have been directed to deduct Rs 1,000 and refund the entire fee if a candidate migrates to another college or cancels admission up to December 31.

“In order to avoid financial hardships being faced by parents,” reasoned the UGC for the full fee refund, including that of all charges. Several private and deemed universities have been upset over the refund directions, for most of them have stuck to the admission schedules followed in pre-Covid times. “If students cancel admission in December, how do we fill up those seats? Should we keep seats vacant for four years?” asked the pro-vice chancellor of a deemed university.
