UGA coach Kirby Smart evaluates recent scrimmage

On Saturday, the Georgia Bulldogs held a preseason scrimmage as we count down the days until they take on the Vanderbilt Commodores in their season-opener.

To say the least, head coach Kirby Smart was not exactly enthusiastic about his team’s effort and intensity in the scrimmage.

“I didn’t think we had the same juice today as a team,” Smart said. “Both No. 1 units were a little lethargic, not real good timing, some bust on defense, so there are some things to clean up. The good news is we’ve got time to clean it up.”

Smart also acknowledged the importance of having a team identity as the offseason winds down.

“We’ve got to make sure everybody is responding the right way and creating an identity,” Smart said. “I didn’t think we created an identity today.”

There were, however, some positives about the scrimmage, such as the play of backup QB Stetson Bennett.

“He was really steady, really consistent and moved around the pocket well, Smart said. “I’m proud of Stetson for that because he has worked really hard on doing that.”

The Dawgs will need as much preparation as they can get before they embark on a season in which many fans and pundits expect them to do great things and possibly even capture a national championship.
