UGA basketball falls in last seconds to Mississippi State after toy thrown on court

Georgia’s basketball team suffered a tough loss at the hands of Mississippi State in Athens last night, after one fan threw a stuffed Bulldog toy on the court with 0.5 seconds left.

Mississippi State was already shooting two free throws with the game tied at 67-67, when a fan threw the toy on the court, resulting in a technical foul call.

Mississippi State’s Quinndary Weatherspoon made just one of the three foul shots, which was enough for Mississippi St. to win 68-67. Weatherspoon already missed his first shot when the Bulldog landed on the court, so he would’ve only had one remaining shot to ice the game. The technical foul was awarded without explanation to UGA coach Tom Crean, who was furious in the ensuing moments. In fact, Crean made an announcement to fans, via a scorer’s table microphone, to not throw objects on the court.

The controversial defeat sealed the Dawgs’ 12th SEC loss, with only one SEC win. Overall, UGA is now 10-16 on the year. Fortunately, it is not all bad news for Georgia hoops, with the No. 2 player of the 2019 class, Anthony Edwards committing and a proven first year coach in Tom Crean to help the program rebuild.
