UGA baseball rises in rankings after spectacular series with LSU

The Georgia baseball team came into the week riding a nine-game win streak at 18-2 and 3-0 in the SEC.  Now, the Bulldogs are 21-3 after a 3-1 week that included two Top 15 wins over the LSU Tigers and a series-clinching victory against Georgia State.

Coach Scott Stricklin’s bunch got things rolling on Tuesday with a 12-1 demolition of the Panthers before taking the LSU series in a rubber match Sunday.

The Bulldogs lost the opening game 1-0 Friday despite a great outing from pitcher Emerson Hancock but knocked off the Tigers 2-0 and 9-7 respectively on Saturday and Sunday.

In the Saturday win, Georgia held off an LSU threat late in the game and later punched in two runs off of right field singles.

Sunday, the Bulldogs held onto their early 4-0 lead from John Cable’s grand slam to defeat LSU 9-7 in a thriller.

Now, Georgia has moved up in every new rankings poll due to the quality wins.  The Bulldogs were stuck in place for the majority of non-conference play because of a weaker schedule but that is no longer the case.

D1Baseball.com lists the Dawgs at No. 4 while Baseball America has them at No. 6, which is its highest ranking of Georgia in a decade. The Bulldogs climbed one spot in the D1Baseball.com poll and five in Baseball America’s.
