UFC star 'fed up' being subtitled during interviews due to Scottish accent

Scots UFC star Paul Craig has revealed his patience is wearing thin with TV reporters who use subtitles to translate him.

The mixed martial artist is one of the sport’s biggest names but admits fans in the US sometimes struggle with his Scottish accent.

The 35-year-old, from Airdrie, who is known as Bearjew, has competed in the UFC since 2016.

He said US broadcasters often use subtitles when he is speaking on camera and interpreters have translated for him at post-fight interviews.

He told Radio Scotland ’s Off The Ball: “Our trash talking is tremendous but the issue we have got is nobody can understand it.

“It’s a bit disrespectful when you’re still speaking English and it’s getting broadcast to the English-speaking world and they are subtitling it because they can’t understand it.

“You do a post-fight interview. I’ve had an interpreter relaying what I’ve said. That’s disrespectful to all Scottish people.” Paul will fight Brazil’s Johnny Walker in Rio on January 21.
