UFC star Conor McGregor has not been drug tested for almost 12 months

UFC star Conor McGregor has not been subject to a drug test since the third quarter of last year.

As part of the UFC's anti-doping policy which was implemented in 2015, all fighters are subject to random drug tests 365 days a year. Whereabouts information is submitted to the United States Anti-Doping Agency [USADA] by the fighters, which allows the anti-doping agency to locate them for out-of-competition testing.

McGregor hasn't fought since breaking his leg against Dustin Poirier in their trilogy fight last July, but despite his inactivity he should still be subject to random drug testing unless he notifies the UFC of his retirement and therefore exits the USADA testing pool. Official records on the anti-doping agency's website show that McGregor has not been drug tested for the whole of 2022, last receiving one random test in the third quarter of 2021.

There are a handful of other fighters who have a longer period of absence than McGregor but who have still been subject to random drug tests this year. Former bantamweight title challenger Urijah Faber hasn't fought in almost three years, but has still been tested four times in 2022. UFC great Jon Jones last fought in February 2020 but has still been drug tested three times this year. Whilst Yana Kunitskaya, who last fought on the same card as McGregor, has been tested three times in 2022.

Since USADA was introduced, McGregor has been randomly drug tested 62 times and has never failed a test. The years McGregor was most tested by USADA were 2016 and 2021, being visited 11 times by the anti-doping agency for both of those years. Records of drug tests were last updated on USADA's website at the beginning of September.

McGregor will not fight again until 2023 as he is busy filming for his Hollywood debut in the Dominican Republic. A number of opponents are expected to be in contention for a shot at McGregor upon his return to the cage, with the Irishman eager to fight for the 170lb title and add a third belt to his collection.

The former two-weight champion admitted he has had problems with his broken leg since his rematch against Nate Diaz in 2016. Posting a video of him checking a kick in the fight, he wrote: "Clean. The beginning of my own shin damage began this fight also. Nate clean checked my kick in the very first round. I hit his knee full on. Forever since and to this day I carry it. Right to the full break and even now. It comes with the territory when you are a proper bad***."
