UFC president Dana White reveals Fight Island start date in conversation with Eddie Hearn

Dana White has confirmed he is looking at June 27 for the first-ever UFC Fight Island event.

UFC became the first major sport to make a comeback following the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, as Justin Gaethje shocked Tony Ferguson at UFC 249 in May.

With the event proving a resounding success, neither White nor the UFC have slowed down, with three subsequent cards going ahead since and another to take place this Saturday.

White - who has spoken of Fight Island throughout the lockdown period - has now revealed June 27 as the date he is looking at, adding the costs for the upcoming fights are to be staggering.

Speaking to Eddie Hearn and Tony Bellew on Matchroom Boxing's 'Talk the Talk', White said: "Fight Island is so f****** expensive and so f****** crazy - and almost impossible to pull off.

"You're talking about planes, flying people over, you have to quarantine people. It's insane to be even trying to do this. But I promise you we will do it and we will pull it off.

"I believe that in doing this, it's going to help grow the sport immensely. It's going to help financially and in many different ways. I know we can do it."

During the chat, White slightly mixed up the dates before going back to correct himself.

"I'm hoping the first fight should be July 25," he said. "I'm not saying it's going to be July 25, but that's the date I'm shooting for."

He later said: "I made a mistake earlier when I told you guys about Fight Island. The first fight on Fight Island is probably going to be around June 27 - not July."

The American believes Fight Island will offer UFC fans an escape from the pandemic and says he won't be making any money from it.

"It's been an absolute war to get through what we got through," he said. "But I'm proud to say we've not laid off any employees, I haven't cut anybody's salaries. My fighters are all working and making money."

He added: "All these other leagues, they're all trying to cut everyone's salaries in half. I'm not cutting anyone's. Am I losing money? Yes! We're losing lots of money.

"These are times right now that you have to go. People are looking for an escape. People need live sports. We need this right now - and I know I can do it, and do it safely."
