UFC heavyweight fighter fails to make weight after scaling over 266lb limit

UFC heavyweight Justin Tafa has become the first fighter in the promotion's history to miss the heavyweight limit of 266lbs.

The Australian knockout artist is set to face Harry Hunsucker on tomorrow's Fight Night event from the Apex facility in Las Vegas, and missed weight by one pound.

Tafa required the towel as he stripped off to take the scale, and came in at 267lbs, which is actually two pounds over the 265 limit for heavyweights.

There is a one pound allowance for fighters in non-title bouts, so had he lost the extra pound he would have technically been within the weight.

Hunsucker made the weight with ease, tipping the scales over two-stone lighter at 238.5lbs, despite being two inches taller than Tafa, who is a relatively small heavyweight at just six foot.

The fight will still take place, with Hunsucker set to take a cut of Tafa's earnings for the prelim bout.

It is yet to be confirmed how much Tafa will be fined, and his purse is undisclosed, but the general practice is that a fighter who misses weight surrenders 20 per cent of their earnings.

That 20 per cent is split in half, with one part going to the opposing fighter and the other going to the commission, in this case the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

Tafa wasn't the only one to miss weight on the card, with Sijara Eubanks also coming in over at 127.5lbs for a flyweight, or 125lb fight with Melissa Gatto.

And Macy Chiasson had the largest miss of the card, coming in at 148.5lbs for a featherweight, or 145lb, contest against Raquel Pennington.

Chiasson likely missed due to stepping in for the fight on short notice, but this is the second time both she and Eubanks have come in over the limit for a fight.

Both of the heavyweights will feel that they need a win on Saturday night, having lost their last fights, with Tafa currently holding an unimpressive 1-3 record in the promotion after a three-fight win streak in his early career.

The event is headlined by a match at the top of the heavyweight division, with No.3 Derrick Lewis facing No.7 Chris Daukas, with the co-main event pitting Stephen Thompson against Belal Muhammad.

Both bouts could prove integral to the future of their divisions, particularly the welterweight fight that could help to establish a future contender to the seemingly unbeatable Kamaru Usman.

Thompson is renowned as one of the best strikers in MMA given his karate background, and could prove tricky on the feet if Usman is unable to take him down.

Meanwhile, Muhammad gave top contender Leon Edwards problems in a fight that ended as a no contest due to an eye poke, and he believes that he is ready for a run to the top of the division.
