Conor McGregor surprised UFC fans early Tuesday morning by announcing his retirement from “Mixed Martial Art” on Twitter. McGregor last fought in October of 2018 and lost his lightweight championship to Khabib Nurmagomedov, a bout that was capped by a wild brawl between the fighters’ camps.
Dana White said that it “makes sense” for McGregor to retire and oversee his new whiskey empire, and McGregor even reference the brand in his retirement tweet. This isn’t the first time McGregor has announced that he’s walking away from the sport, however. He tweeted that he was retiring in 2016, only to come back a few months later for another epic battle with Nate Diaz.
Some of McGregor’s colleagues believe he’s not truly retiring from the sport.
WWE superstar Finn Balor, meanwhile, joked that he’ll see McGregor at WrestleMania 35 in April.
