UFC fighter Irwin Rivera arrested and charged with attempted murder of his two sisters

UFC fighter Irwin Rivera has been arrested and charged with attempted murder after allegedly stabbing his two sisters in their sleep.

The MMA star is being held in jail without bail, according to the Boynton Beach Police Department in Florida.

Two women, aged 22 and 33, were found with multiple stab wounds, according to an incident report obtained by ESPN. Both women are alive, with one in stable condition and the other in critical condition in hospital.

The report says that Rivera told police that he entered the bedroom while his sisters were sleeping and stabbed them with a 'brass knuckle knife', while also saying that he believed he had been told to carry out the stabbing by a 'higher power'.

The 31-year-old fighter has fought three times in the UFC and holds a professional record of 10-6. He most recently fought in September, losing to Andrew Ewell by split-decision.

A UFC statement read: "UFC is aware of the recent incident involving Irwin Rivera and subsequently received information from his management that he has been exhibiting behavior consistent with mental health issues.

"The allegations are extremely troubling and the organization is currently gathering additional information.

"The investigation is ongoing and any potential next steps including disciplinary action or medical attention will be determined upon the conclusion.

"Furthermore, UFC has informed Rivera's management that he will not be offered a bout at this time."
