UFC lightweight champion Jon Jones was on Thursday arrested on suspicion of driving while under the influence and the negligent use of a firearm.

Jones faces charges of possession of an open container of alcohol, also failing to provide proof of insurance for his vehicle, Albuquerque police confirmed.

The police stated officers nearby heard a gunshot, subsequently finding 'a half-empty bottle of tequila and handgun' in the 32-year-old's car, according to Associated Press.

The incident took place just before 1am on Thursday morning.

An Albuquerque police spokesperson said: "As part of the investigation into this incident, our Gun Violence Reduction Unit will test the firearm and bullet casing to determine whether the gun has been used in any crimes. Reducing gun violence in Albuquerque is our top priority.”

This is not Jones' first run-in with the law, arrested for drink driving in 2010 and found guilty of a hit-and-run in 2015. Additionally, Jones was charged with misdemeanour battery just last year.
