UFC 283 results: Gilbert Burns quickly taps Neil Magny, calls out Colby Covington

RIO DE JANEIRO –  It took Gilbert Burns nine months to find a fight, and less than five minutes to end it at UFC 283.

In the UFC 283 featured bout, Burns (21-5 MMA, 14-5 UFC) submitted Neil Magny (27-10 MMA, 20-9 UFC) by arm-triangle choke at 4:15 of Round 1. The welterweight bout was part of the pay-per-view main card at Jeunesse Arena.

After a brief feeling-out process, Burns got hold of Magny and the beginning of the end commenced. Burns elevated and dropped Magny to the canvas. Slowly but surely, Burns moved into mount. Once there, Burns quickly grabbed hold of Magny’s neck and shifted to the side, the submission locked.

After the fight, Burns said he wants a quick turnaround and called for a bout against Colby Covington.

“I want to be back very quick, and I’m going to finish everybody,” Burns yelled during his in-cage interview with Daniel Cormier. “Colby Covington, I’m coming for you.

With the victory, Burns bounces back from a closely contested Fight of the Year candidate loss against Khamzat Chimaev in April. He is 7-2 in his most recent nine bouts, with the only other loss in a UFC welterweight title challenge against Kamaru Usman in 2021.

Magny falls to 1-2 in his most recent three. One of the most active fighters on the UFC roster, Magny is 9-3 since February 2020.
