UFC 249 results: Justin Gaethje dominates Tony Ferguson, Henry Cejudo beats Dominick Cruz and retires

Justin Gaethje has ended Tony Ferguson's eight-year unbeaten run with a dominant victory at UFC 249.

Gaethje produced a flawless striking performance in an empty Vystar Veterans Memorial Arena in Florida to end Ferguson's 12-fight winning streak and become the interim UFC lightweight champion.

In the first major sporting event to be held in the US since the coronavirus outbreak, Gaethje's vicious shots echoed around the empty area as he punished his opponent across four-and-a-half rounds - with the contest stopped by referee Herb Dean in the fifth.

Ferguson, a bloody and bruised mess at the end, absorbed more damage than many of Gaethje's former opponents put together - taking the shots that have put down the likes of Donald Cerrone, Edson Barboza and James Vick in the past.

But he was unable to offer anything telling in return with Gaethje adding new found patience to his superb striking accuracy to get the comprehensive win.

He declined an offer to hold the interim lightweight title in his post-fight interview, telling UFC president Dana White: 'I'll wait for the real one."

'Real' champion Khabib Nurmagomedov, who was originally scheduled to headline the card against Ferguson, will be his next test later this year.

In the night’s co-main event, Henry Cejudo defended his bantamweight title against the returning Dominick Cruz - before announcing his shock retirement from MMA in his post-fight interview.

The 2008 Olympian secured a second round TKO win, landing a superb knee before finishing the bout with unanswered punches on the mat.

Cruz, who was fighting for the first time in three-and-a-half years after a lengthy battle with injuries, was frustrated with the decision to stop the contest - but hopes of a rematch were swiftly shot down by the departing champion.

"I am retiring tonight, at 33 I am happy with my career, Dana White is the man and I am thankful. But Triple C is out.”

Francis Ngannou secured the quickest finish of the night with a stunning 20 second KO of Jairzinho Rozenstruik in their heavyweight contest.

The Cameroon-born fighter launched a series of hooks and haymakers at his opponent and while he missed with the first two, the third sent Rozenstruik crumbling to the mat.
