Conor McGregor’s first trip to the octagon since his October 2018 loss to UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov takes place on Saturday, January 18. The former two-division champion faces ex-lightweight title challenger Donald Cerrone in the main event of that fight card, UFC 246.
Neither McGregor nor Cerrone have done much press for this matchup, so expect potential fireworks when the two outspoken fighters take their spots on the dais for the UFC 246 pre-fight press conference, which takes place on Wednesday at Pearl Theater in Las Vegas. The event kicks off at 8 p.m. ET.
Before Nurmagomedov submitted McGregor in the fourth round of their UFC 229 matchup, McGregor was on a two-fight winning streak. He topped Nate Diaz by majority decision in a welterweight bout and then knocked out Eddie Alvarez to become the lightweight champion. McGregor held the featherweight title at that time as well. With the Alvarez win, McGregor became the first UFC fighter to hold two titles at the same time. The UFC later stripped him of both belts because of inactivity.
Cerrone has been finished in his past two outings. He fell to Justin Gaethje in September 2019. Before that Tony Ferguson stopped him in June of the same year. Cerrone has only had one three-fight losing skid in his lengthy MMA career.
UFC 246 takes place at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday, January 18. The pay-per-view card streams on ESPN+, following prelims on ESPN and early prelims on UFC Fight Pass and ESPN+.
