UFC 234 was a memorable night in many ways.
The event in Melbourne, Australia on Feb. 10 was scheduled to be headlined with Robert Whittaker’s UFC middleweight title defense against Kelvin Gastelum. But Whittaker had to withdraw the morning of the card.
That postponed the title fight, and it meant New Zealand’s Israel Adesanya and his bout with the legendary Anderson Silva, which was scheduled to be the co-feature, become the new main event.
Then the duo put on one memorable show, as Adesanya, the next-generation equivalent of Silva, dazzled, but the old master himself, Silva, showed he still had tricks up his sleeve. By the time Adesanya earned a unanimous decision win, the Whittaker-Gastelum cancelation was nearly forgotten.
Then Adesanya went out two months later and beat Gastelum for an interim title in one of 2019’s greatest fights. And now we’re closing in on UFC 243 on Oct. 6, where the circle will complete when Whittaker and Adesanya unify the championship at Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium.
So while the days count down to the biggest MMA fight ever between competitors from that part of the world, the UFC has made the memorable Adesanya-Silva clash free for all to watch.
