UFC 242’s Islam Makhachev on Davi Ramos: ‘I don’t care what he has; I have more’

ABU DHABI – Islam Makhachev is unmoved by Davi Ramos’ skillset going into their lightweight fight at UFC 242.

Although Ramos (10-2 MMA, 4-1 UFC) is known for his standout grappling ability, Makhachev (17-1 MMA, 6-1 UFC) has no fear of going to the mat on fight night. In fact, no matter where the action goes, Makhachev is confident he’ll have the upper hand.

“We had a very good training camp,” Makhachev said Wednesday at UFC 242 open workouts. “I’m going to do the same thing. I know my opponent (has) good jiu-jitsu, good grappling, good striking. I don’t care what he has; I have more.”

Makhachev, who trains out of American Kickboxing Academy in San Jose, Calif., alongside UFC lightweight champion and UFC 242 headliner Khabib Nurmagomedov, is among the most popular fighters on the card because of its location.

He said he’s relishing the moment and is keen to have the spotlight all to himself in the future.

“I know a lot of guys are coming to support me and Khabib,” Makhachev said. “Thank you. This is crazy. I just want to say thank you for this. I’m going to headline a card in Abu Dhabi one day.”

UFC 242 takes place Saturday at The Arena in Yas Island. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on FX and ESPN+/UFC Fight Pass.
